Building the Centre
Forward works commenced on the site of the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia on 13 November 2006. Broad Construction Services carried out the forward works, which included demolition, excavation and substructure to prepare the site for the main construction.
The tender for the main construction contract was awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd on 5 October 2007 and work started on site at the end of October that year. The construction program is scheduled to take approximately 110 weeks.
What is happening on site
November 2009
The powered flying system is being installed in the fly-tower and fit-out of the tower cladding will soon be underway.
In Heath Ledger Theatre the orchestra-pit lift is being installed. The final pre-cast panels outside the theatre are being completed and the concrete slab to the theatre roof will soon be cast.
The large acoustic doors to separate the scene dock from Heath Ledger Theatre will be in place in early November.
Glazing and temporary carpet to the William Street buildings is being fitted and once complete, the John Holland project team and contractors will move into the upper level of the William Street building to free up the Chester Building for renovations.
In December the main crane for the site will be removed and this will make way for the bronze box at the entry to be completed and for the glazing along Roe Street to commence.
September 2009
Roof and plantroom steelwork on Heath Ledger Theatre is being installed and the loading dock roof is being fitted. The timber paneling to the Heath Ledger Theatre drum is being prepared for installation.
In September the fly-tower roof is being cast and the fly-system equipment, which has been loaded into the tower, will be installed once the roof is complete.
The John Holland project team and contractors will move into the upper level of the William Street building to free up the Chester Building for renovations. The Chester Building will be the office accommodation for the venue managers and associate theatre company.
Tenders for the technical theatre equipment have been received and are currently being assessed.
August 2009
Internal fit-out of plumbing, electrical and mechanical services in the Studio Underground continues while finishings on the Rehearsal Rooms is in progress.
The internal walls to the main drum of Heath Ledger Theatre are visible and construction of the stairwells and lighting slots is underway. Steelwork for the roof of Heath Ledger Theatre is under manufacture.
In August work will commence to load the flying system equipment into the winch-rooms of the fly tower. Following this the mechanical services will be loaded before the structure for the roof of the fly tower is installed.
Work on the loading dock driveway is near completion and construction on the William Street buildings and upper gallery continues.
The tender for the technical theatre equipment has been released and research into communication systems that will best serve The Centre is ongoing.
July 2009
Work is continuing on Heath Ledger Theatre and the walls to the drum of the theatre are now complete.
Steel work on the fly tower has commenced and the final concrete pour for the fly tower walls will occur by the end of the month.
Construction on the resident company accommodation on William Street continues with work on the roofing and gallery walkway. The John Holland site office will soon relocate into this area to allow the Chester Building to be vacated for restoration work.
The site will soon be running off its own power once the installation of a sub-station and transformer room is completed. Further electrical and mechanical fit-out continues.
The Department is finalising the technical theatre specifications for the tender of lighting and sound equipment.

Work is continuing on Heath Ledger Theatre and the internal walls and foyer area are now visible.
The John Holland Group contractors’ accommodation has moved into the Heath Ledger Theatre sub-stage area to make room for construction of The Courtyard and upper viewing galleries.
Construction on the resident company accommodation on William Street is progressing and work on the fly tower continues.
The site will soon be running off its own power once the installation of a sub-station and transformer room is completed. Further electrical and mechanical fit-out continues and fire and plumbing outlets are also being installed in the Studio Underground and other areas.
The Department is working with the Technical Panel and consultants to finalise the theatre specifications for the procurement of lighting and sound equipment.
February 2009
With construction of the Studio Underground complete, both the studio and adjacent rehearsal room are now undergoing preliminary electrical and mechanical fit-out.
October 2008
As the building rises out of the ground and takes shape, underground work continues with the installation of pre-run electrical and hydraulic equipment.
June 2008
On 3 June the basement floor of the State Theatre Centre was poured, following the removal of more than 10,000m3 soil from the site over the past six months.
